Mending Hurts
What is it?
Humans are born to disconnect and survive. When this happens, we have recovery needs. When these needs aren’t or can’t be met, we are left with trauma. But we can always recover from trauma. Mending Hurts identifies how trauma impacts human functioning in three key ways, how connected interactions support three phases of recovery, and nine outcomes that arise from these different phases of recovery.
Who finds it useful?
Anyone whose work brings them into contact with overwhelmed or traumatised people. Social workers, family support workers, probation officers, foster carers, drug and alcohol workers, designated teachers and SendCo’s are among the many practitioners who have told us that Mending Hurts has helped them to make sense of their work in new and transformative ways. It also supports leaders and Human Resources staff to understand what helps individuals and teams function effectively.
What learning does it support?
- Understanding stress, toxic stress and trauma.
- Noticing and developing skills in inclusive practice.
- Enhancing practice that supports and promotes recovery from individual and collective trauma.
KCA’s models are observations of core human processes, rooted in robust academic research. They help practitioners make the links between their everyday practice and the
underpinning science and are themed around relationships, recovery and resilience. Each model is CPD-accredited and tailored to your context.

We hope to share the concepts wider as I believe this training could help everyone.

The themes covered were varied and very interesting and useful. I will be able to apply the strategies and tips in my working life for the betterment of colleagues and myself. I will also be able to use this in other spheres of my life, including when working with other partners. Five to Thrive was very useful.
